L’Astore Masseria is an enchanting agricultural estate of approximately 100 hectares owned by the Benegiamo - Di Summa family since the early 1930s. L’Astore was one of the first “masserie”, the typical agricultural estate of Salento, to be saved from a state of abandonment with a loving restoration campaign inspired by the family’s admiration of Apulian traditions. The family has been living on the alluring estate since the beginning of the 1960s. For most of the last century L’Astore, following the typical farming methods of the times, has produced wine in large quantities destined for foreign markets and the cellars of northern Italy. After a suspension of production from the 1970s to the mid 1990s, Professor Achille and his sons, Paolo, Stefano and Luca Benegiamo, realized the time was right to reinitiate wine production. Focusing their efforts on quality. Together with the professionalism of the enthusiastic L’Astore team, an intense program of vineyard replanting was carried out on terrain prepared with extreme care, groomed specifically for the characteristics of the wines to be produced. Next to the impressive olive oil pressing hall, built in the 1700s, is the underground cellar built in the architectural style of Salento. With star shaped vaults based on pillars built with the typical limestone blocks from the Lecce area, the beauty and charm of the cellar has caused many visitors to say it is one of the most attractive and inviting wine cellars in all of Southern Italy. Strengthened with deep and ancient knowledge of the local terrain and with the excellent quality of the grapes being gathered from vineyards and lovingly harvested according to the most advanced agronomic techniques, today L’Astore represents an ambitious project of organic farming that seeks to explore and to interpret the uniqueness of the wines from its terroir.
